Little Tesla from Călăraşi

Little Tesla from Călăraşi

Working on different innovative projects during the MaST activities, I developed abilities and compentencies in the Science-related field. Each of my projects began through creating a simple object during the creation workshops activities, which challenged me to learn new things permanently.

I was nervous every time I had to present a project, I had to find the proper words in order to present in English, I had the chance to meet students from other schools as well, to analyze their presenations and how they imagined them, which enabled me to be even more fascinated with the world of Technology. Everything that happened within this project was of great appeal to me and helped me get closer to the Scientific world.

At the last workshop, I created the Tesla Coil. I know, it was invented a long time ago, but I am happy that I now know how it functions, that I’ve discovered how to build it and that I have followed Tesla’s path. I am explaining in this article how it functions and what we need to know about it.

The Tesla Coil (BOBINA TESLA) is an enlightening invention of the great Scholar Nikola Tesla (1891). The device is a resonant transformer which generates high-frequency voltages. In 1896, on September 22, Tesla named his invention "The device for producing electric current and potential". He tried to transmit electric energy on a long distance, without wires, economically.

The system has the possibility to meet our globally energetic needs. Tesla declared: "IF we use fuel to obtain energy, it means we live through our own capital, which we will consume rapidly. This method is barbaric and recklessly wasteful, and it must be stopped, for the sake of the next generations".

In other words, the coil is a special transformer that, fuelled by the grid or the batteries, causes high-frequency voltages, obtaining a high-frequency current. It is a transformer coiled in air (without nucleus), in which the primary and the secondary can function at a resonant frequency. The device can be created in a simple way, at any dimensiom, without a depth-in knowledge of Electronics.

The assembly consists of: power supply (12 volt), oscillator (the primary coild+the transistor, the secondary coil and operating tell-tale (LED).

A field of high frequency is formed around the transformer; that is, when an energy-saving bulb is placed in this field, it starts shining (this is the sceret of the Star Wars’ lightsaber).

Tesla also invented the electric motor, important equipment for planes and cars, using the energy emitted by the coil, through ionizing the enclosed atmosphere.
